The overall theme of the Holy Thursday liturgy is our identity as a Eucharistic people; an identity given to us by Jesus at the Last Supper. At this Farewell Meal, Jesus insists upon washing the feet of his disciples. In this way, we are reminded that despite all the differences and divisions which might exist between us, as Eucharistic people, we are commanded to serve one another, and to remember the unity that is ours as brother and sisters in Christ. The two special rituals which mark our celebration of Holy Thursday are:-
a) The Washing of Feet: Jesus washes the feet of His disciples and tells them to do the same for one another. This was his "Mandatum", or command -hence the name "Maundy Thursday". We ritualise to living out that command today by witnessing in this contemporary gesture of service.
b) The Collection:The collection on this night from all parishes of the Archdiocese is for the up-keep of the Holy Land.
The Holy Thursday liturgy ends quietly, with the transfer of the Holy Eucharist to the Altar of Reposition, which is followed by the Holy Hour Adoration, where we begins the hours of 'waiting' with Jesus as the saving event begins to unfold. Quiet moments for personal reflections help us to accompany Jesus as we recall his Agony in the Garden. Then we go forth in silence to continue our watchful journey through the Three Days.
