SFX Celebrates Malaysia's 50th. Merdeka Anniversary With Special Mass On 31.8.2007

The 9.00am Thanks - Giving Mass was well attended by parishioners, many of whom came in the country's traditional costumes such as the Kebaya, Baju Kurung, Cheong Sam, Sari and the Jippa. The Mass, presided by Rev. Fr. Simon Yong SJ, parish priest, with Rev. Fr. O. C. Lim SJ , concelebrating with the theme "Malaysiaku Gemilang". With their patriotism the parishioners prayed for continued peace and prosperity for the country and also sung the Negara Ku while the Jalur Gemilang was raised at the beginning of the Mass.

Rev. Fr. Simon Yong in his homily highlighted the need to protect and enhance the social contract agreed on by the founding fathers of the nation ie. Malaysia is a secular nation for all Malaysians with Islam as the official religion. However recent events have eroded and lead to attempts by some to change this social contract and therefore he called on all Malaysians to pray more to God so that we will be able to love all our fellow Malaysians better in the process of nation building. He also noted the contributions of the migrant workers in our country's progress and asked that we also accord them due respect and protection while they were guests of this country.

A simple but typical Malaysian Open-House reception was held after the Mass, graciouly hosted by several BECs. Coupled with the holiday spirit and joy of 50 years of nationhood, the parishioners took time to renew friendship with each other besides catching up on what 50 years of independence has been for them.
